Ringed by dramatic mountains and perched on a narrow fjord-side spit of land, this old trading post’s as remote as they come – yet boasts a trending arts scene. Walk among tin-roofed homes built by salt fish merchants, admire seagoing artifacts and – for some reason – a world-class accordion collection at the Maritime Museum. Discoveries further afield might include splendid Icelandic waterfalls, a pint-sized botanic garden in the tundra, and tiny villages dwarfed by their surrounding peaks.

From the pier, travel to the village S&uacute;&eth;av&iacute;k, located in the neighboring &Aacute;lftafj&ouml;r&eth;ur Fjord. During your drive, you will have a fantastic view over one of Iceland&acute;s largest fjords, &Iacute;safjar&eth;ardj&uacute;p, as well as the majestic snow-white and gray-striped Sn&aelig;fjallastr&ouml;nd mountain chain. Your first stop will bring you to the Arctic Fox Center, which is not only a museum but also a research center, dedicated to Iceland&acute;s only native land mammal. On the way you will visit interesting places while our guide provides you with information about the town, its history and culture. You will hear stories both of ancient and modern times. Furthermore, you will hear about the people, about their living conditions and common beliefs and culture. These can also be found for example in the elves&#39; sagas. At the end you will enjoy a visit to our community church and see the famous altar picture.

Ísafjörður Walk

This biking adventure takes you on one of Iceland&acute;s most scenic roads, &Oacute;shl&iacute;&eth;, the old road between Bolungarv&iacute;k and Hn&iacute;fsdalur. Since 2010, the road has not been used by vehicles thanks to the new Bolungarv&iacute;k Tunnel, and it became an outdoor recreational area. The paved road gives perfect conditions to those that want to be closer to nature. You feel small under the enormous cliffs that seem to be hanging by a thread 300 - 400 meters high. Begin your adventure at the harbor, where you will meet your guide. After every guest is equipped with a bike and a helmet, we will bike towards Hn&iacute;fsdalur, where we take a short stop for a glimpse of the history of this small town. Pass the Bolungarv&iacute;k Tunnel and head on onto &Oacute;shl&iacute;&eth; road. Enjoy the incredible views over the Westfjord&acute;s largest fjord &Iacute;safj&ouml;r&eth;ur, the Sn&aelig;fjallastr&ouml;nd mountain chain, and the Hornstrandir nature reserve. There will be stops on the way with the opportunity to rest and take pictures.

Mt. Óshlíð Bike Ride

Join this adventurous whale watching safari through one of Iceland&acute;s largest fjords, &Iacute;safjar&eth;ardj&uacute;p. Board yor RIB boat, a speedy, open boat, that allows you to feel the connection to the ocean and the wildlife. The captain will turn off the engine at a chosen time to get closer to the whales and not to disturb the animals when we get close. While yout keep an eye out for whales blows and flukes, you might also spot other wildlife such as puffins and seals. The &Iacute;safjar&eth;ardj&uacute;p bay is known for its breathtaking views, unique landscapes, and rich wildlife. The route chosen may slightly differ each day depending on where the whales are hanging around, but most days you will be passing a snow-flecked mountain range called Sn&aelig;fjallastr&ouml;nd (Snow-Mountain-Coast) and the beautiful island of Vigur, a paradise for birds.

When you look up to the mountains surrounding &Iacute;safj&ouml;r&eth;ur Fjord, you will notice an interesting indentation in one of the mountains. If you ask the locals to explain this, they might tell you that this &#39;bowl&#39; in the mountain was formed by a glacier, but it is more likely that they tell you what really happened. According to the legend, a huge troll once lived in the area. One day the troll decided to go for a walk in the fjord, but the troll got tired fast, so it took a seat on the tall mountain above the town. The mountain couldn&rsquo;t handle the weight of the massive troll, so a part of the mountainside was squashed, leaving a large bowl-like &#39;throne&#39; in the mountain. The dent is therefore known as the Troll&rsquo;s Throne, even though its formal name is &#39;Naustahvilft&#39;. The Troll&rsquo;s Throne is a popular hiking destination, ascending approximately 738 feet and situated only a few hundred feet from the port. The hiking trail is an ideal mixture of soil, grass, and trodden paths made by sheep. The view over &Iacute;safj&ouml;r&eth;ur town and the picturesque fjord is a great reward for completing your hike.

Explore the Icelandic past and present local culture, shaped by the rural way of life and harsh weather conditions. This journey takes you back in time at the fisherman&acute;s hut. An authentic, refurbished fishing station that lies just off the Arctic circle, depicting the life of fishing crews through the ages. Attend a live music act at the artfully decorated, historic church, followed by historic accounts and folktales from the area. Enjoy sweeping views of the Sn&aelig;fjallastr&ouml;nd mountain chain and the sub-Arctic landscape, carved out by glaciers during the last Ice Age, whilst travelling to Tungudalur valley, a tranquil nature spot favored by the locals. Continue to the magical Lake M&yacute;vatn, where you will experience an Off-Road drive to reach the old L&uacute;dentsborgir crater row. Explore the craters and enjoy some great views over M&yacute;vatn and the surrounding area, before enjoying a lunch at a local restaurant. Explore some Lake M&yacute;vatn selected attractions and beautiful scenery. The journey continues through remote heaths and valleys until you reach B&aacute;rdardalur valley, where Skj&aacute;lfandaflj&oacute;t River &ndash; a white glacial river originating from Vatnajokull glacier (the largest ice cap in Iceland), runs down the valley. It runs across the highlands, carving out magnificent riverbeds on its way. Situated at the edge of the Highlands the breathtaking Aldeyjarfoss waterfall awaits, where white water cascades from a high cliff into a ravine lined with black basalt columns. From the waterfall, drive down the valley and towards Akureyri, the last part of your journey takes you through a birch and flowered covered forest named Vaglask&oacute;gur. Off the Beaten Track 4x4 Sightseeing Adventure

Gr&iacute;msey is Iceland&rsquo;s northernmost inhabited territory. The small village with a population of approximately 100 people is mostly dependent on commercial fishing but agriculture and egg collection are also common. The island has been inhabited for a few centuries, although it has been difficult to estimate when exactly the first people settled there. The island is small but rich in resources and on clear days the view is magnificent. At Akureyri Airport, board your plane for a short flight to Gr&iacute;msey Island. If the weather is clear, you will have great views over the tall mountains that line both sides of Eyjafj&ouml;r&eth;ur Fjord. Once Gr&iacute;msey is in sight, you will see beautiful coves, decorated with high basalt columns and steep cliffs. Arriving in Gr&iacute;msey, you will be greeted by a local guide that will take you on a walk around the island acquainting you with the history, culture and nature of the island. Here are unique conditions for bird watching as the extensive bird colonies are said to accommodate at least sixty different species, more than half of which nest on the island. After your brief guided walk, reboard your plane for the short flight back to Akureyri.

Polar Flight to Grímsey Island

The Eyjafj&ouml;r&eth;ur Fjord is narrow and deep and is perfect for the small RIB boats that depart from Akureyri pier. The RIB boats allow you to get closer to the whales and wildlife than any other boat can. The boats are small and fast which means we can cover a larger area as we search for wildlife. This allows for an increased chance of spotting whales, dolphins and bird life. Like all wild nature experiences, sightings cannot be guaranteed. However, the potential for whale watching from Akureyri is excellent with a 95% success rate for spotting whales. Many species have been sighted here, including blue-fin, humpback, minke and sei whales. &nbsp;

Returning to Akureyri, your next stop will be the Akureyri Museum to explore its interesting exhibition on local history, followed by the Nonni Museum, in the old house of the writer J&oacute;n Sveinsson, author of numerous children&#39;s books about the Nonni and Manni brothers. After the museum visits, drive to Hl&iacute;&eth;arfjall mountain for a brief photo stop. Next, head to Akureyri Swimming Pool, from where we will walk to Akureyri&#39;s Church and Artists Alley, with workshops and galleries to visit. Finally, walk back to your ship.

The name refers to an important historical event that took place in the year 1000 when Icelanders officially became a Christian nation.&nbsp; Our drive continues through fertile farmlands until we reach Lake M&yacute;vatn, one of Iceland&rsquo;s natural treasures. The lake is home to tens of thousands of birds, among them a variety of duck species. The area surrounding the lake is of tremendous geological interest. The next stop on our journey is N&aacute;maskar&eth;, a striking geothermal field full of mud-pots, steam vents, sulphur deposits, boiling springs and fumaroles. The experience is otherworldly with incredible colours, steam that rises from the earth and the loud popping of air bubbles in the mud-pots. Close by is Dimmuborgir, a dramatic lava landscape with strange formations, columns and arches that have been the source of many folktales in Iceland. The name means &ldquo;dark fortress&rdquo;, an appropriately mystical name for this peculiar place. A short drive from Dimmuborgir is Sk&uacute;tusta&eth;ir pseudo-craters. The craters were formed by gas explosions when boiling lava flowed over the wetlands near the lake. This glacier-clad, barely sub-North Pole clime once hosted a tropical forest. That was long ago, in prehistoric times. Nonetheless, the forest`s presence helped establish what we now know as the town of Longyearbyen. In 1899, coal - the remains of the once-flourishing tropical vegetation - was discovered. In 1906, American John M. Longyear founded the Arctic Coal Company, lending the town his capital and his name. While Americans, Russians and Swedes rushed to the Svalbard archipelago (of which the island of Spitsbergen is a part) in search of black gold, you will make a wealth of other discoveries. During the summer, continuous daylight coaxes flowers into an astounding display of color. Abundant wildlife includes polar bears, arctic foxes, reindeer, seals, walruses and whales.
